SL-450 vs Ordinary U-Clamps: Which to Use?
When terminating wire ropes, the choice of hardware is crucial for safety and efficiency. Two common options are swaged terminations (often using SL-450 style fittings) and bolted U-bolt wire rope clips. Understanding the differences helps in selecting the right solution for your application.
Swaged Terminations (SL-450 Style)
Swaged terminations involve compressing a metal sleeve onto the wire rope using a hydraulic press. This method creates a permanent, high-efficiency termination that is compact and smooth. It is ideal for applications where space is limited or where a smooth profile is required to prevent snagging. Swaged fittings are widely rated at up to 100% of the rope’s catalogue breaking strength when installed by a competent operator with correctly matched dies — the termination essentially becomes part of the rope.
Bolted U-Bolt Clips
U-bolt clips are reusable and allow for adjustment. They consist of a U-bolt, a saddle, and two nuts. While convenient for temporary rigging or where frequent disassembly is needed, they are generally less efficient than swaged terminations — a correctly installed U-bolt clip termination is typically rated at around 80% of the rope’s catalogue strength, and that figure drops sharply if the clips are misaligned, under-torqued, or too few for the rope diameter. Proper installation is critical: always follow the never saddle a dead horse rule, meaning the saddle must be placed on the live (load-bearing) end of the rope, and the U-bolt on the dead end. Placing it the wrong way round crushes and damages the live side of the rope under load.
Correct Usage
If using U-bolt clips, ensure the correct number and spacing are used based on the rope diameter — this varies by diameter, so always follow the manufacturer’s clip-count and torque table rather than a rule of thumb. Torque the nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications, and re-check torque after the rope has been loaded once, since clips typically settle slightly. For permanent or high-load applications, swaged terminations are often the preferred choice due to their reliability and strength; U-bolt clips remain useful where a termination needs to be field-adjustable or re-used.
