D Type Anchor Shackle — Anchor End Shackle
The D type anchor shackle is the heavy end shackle that connects the anchor shank to the first length of chain cable. It is a straight-sided bow with enlarged pin bosses and a tapered pin secured by a transverse split pin — not a rigging shackle, and not rated like one.

Where it sits in the cable
Working outboard from the anchor: the anchor shank takes the D-type end shackle, which takes the swivel forerunner, which takes the first shot of common chain. Because the end shackle stays outside the hawse pipe when the anchor is stowed, it does not have to pass over the cable lifter — which is why it can be a conventional bow shackle rather than a link-shaped Kenter.
Not a rigging shackle
This is worth saying plainly, because the two get confused in purchasing. A lifting or rigging shackle is rated by a working load limit, marked with it, and sized in the trade’s own series. An anchor end shackle is sized by the chain diameter it serves, is proof- and break-tested at the loads of that chain, and carries no working load limit at all. They are different products under different rules. Do not substitute one for the other in either direction.
Dimensions
Like the rest of the cable, the shackle is proportional to the chain diameter d: the pin is 1.4d, the shackle 8.7d long overall, 4.6d inside, 5.2d across, with a bow of 3.1d. Those proportions are what let an anchor and a cable specified independently actually go together.
Certification
Every shackle is proof-loaded at the proof load of the chain grade it serves. One unit per batch of 25 is destructively break-tested. Accessories are made in Grade 2 steel as a minimum regardless of the chain grade, forged or cast, and the dimensional tolerance is +5 % / −0 on diameter and ±2.5 % on the rest.

Where these numbers come from. An accessory is proof- and break-tested at the load of the chain it serves, so the load columns here are the same UR W18 values as the chain table — that identity is a requirement, not a coincidence. Dimensions are the ISO 1704 proportions of the chain diameter d. Break test: one unit per batch of 25.
Documentation
What comes with the goods
- Proof load on every unit, at the proof load of the chain grade it serves
- Breaking-load test on one unit per batch of 25
- Works certificate — material (Grade 2 steel minimum), forging or casting method, heat treatment
- Dimensional check: diameter +5 % / −0, other dimensions ±2.5 %
Tell us the class your vessel is being built or surveyed to and we will quote against it, with the certificates that class requires. If you are replacing a shot of chain or a single accessory, send us the diameter and the grade stamped on the end link and we will match it.
Frequently asked questions
Is an anchor shackle the same as a rigging shackle?
No. A rigging shackle is rated and marked with a working load limit and sized in its own series. An anchor end shackle is sized by the chain diameter it serves, proof- and break-tested at that chain’s loads, and carries no working load limit. They fall under different requirements and must not be substituted for each other.
What size anchor shackle do I need?
The one matching your chain’s nominal diameter — the shackle series is indexed on chain diameter, not on the anchor. If you know the diameter and grade stamped on the chain’s end link, that is the whole specification. The table on this page gives the resulting pin diameter and bow dimensions so you can check them against the anchor shank eye.
How is the pin secured?
By a taper: the pin is driven through and held by a transverse split or taper pin through the eye. It is not a threaded pin and should not be treated as one. Renew the securing pin whenever the shackle is broken out and made up again.
