Cortland Plasma 12×12: construction, sizes and where it is used
Cortland Plasma 12×12 is a high-performance rope made from High-Modulus Polyethylene (HMPE), commonly known by the brand name Dyneema. as a supplier, in India, Sealinkers is proud to offer this exceptional product for demanding lifting and rigging applications.
What is HMPE/Dyneema?
The fibre maker describes Dyneema as “15 times stronger than steel, yet light enough to float on water” — a strength-to-weight comparison, not a like-for-like diameter one. Cortland puts the practical effect at “7 to 8 times lighter than a comparable steel rope”. It is approximately 7-8 times lighter than steel wire rope of equal strength. This makes it ideal for applications where weight is a critical factor, such as offshore operations, heavy-lift slings, and tug or mooring lines, where handling a steel-equivalent rope by hand simply isn’t practical.
Construction and Properties
Plasma 12×12 is, in Cortland’s own words, “a 12-strand rope in which each of the strands is, in turn, a 12-strand construction”. That strand-on-strand build is used from 1-5/8 in through 8-1/4 in diameter — below that size the product is Plasma 12-Strand, a 12×1 braid, so not every Plasma rope is a 12×12. This design provides excellent flexibility and handling characteristics compared to a stiffer, twisted construction. The rope is resistant to most chemicals and floats on water, making it suitable for marine environments and easier to recover if it goes overboard during a lift. It also exhibits low creep due to a recrystallisation heat-setting process during manufacture, which helps ensure stable, predictable performance under sustained load rather than gradual elongation.
Applications and Handling
Due to its light weight and high strength, Plasma 12×12 is used in heavy-lift slings, offshore mooring, subsea applications, and anywhere a crew needs to manually handle a rope that would otherwise require a crane just to move it. It is easy to splice, allowing for custom lengths and terminations on site rather than a factory-only termination. However, it requires careful handling: unlike steel, HMPE has very low melting resistance, so it must be kept clear of hot surfaces, running friction, and sharp unprotected edges — a synthetic rope that would show no visible damage from a sharp edge under load can still lose a significant share of its strength internally.
